Polar Creation/User Permissions Error

“Cant set user permissions for: C:/Program Files/QBladeCE_2.0.7.7/Binaries/XFoil”
“Airfoil Analysis Error: XFoil Batch File could not be created! C:\Program Files\QBladeCE_2.0.7.7\TEMP\XFOIL\xfbat0.00.txt”

After importing an aerofoil (NACA0018) and attempting to create a polar to extrapolate and then create a VAWT model, I’m getting the above error messages when I click “Start Analysis” within the “Airfoil Analysis Module”. I have tried going into the settings (Windows 11 PC) to change permissions and editing permissions directly on the application folder but it does not seem to solve the issue.

I have tried using the sample projects. These of course load with existing polars, and I am able to run the turbine simulations without error. However if I click “Start Analysis” in the “Airfoil Analysis Module”, the same error occurs. This doesn’t effect the existing data imported with the sample project.

I’m a final year Aerospace Engineering student at the University of Surrey, using QBlade for my Individual Project. The main deliverable of my project is to create and analyse a VAWT model in QBlade, seems I’ve fallen at the first hurdle…

Any advice would be appreciated!

Hi Luke,

the error you’re seeing happens because QBlade can’t set the read/write/execute permissions for the XFoil binary file (not the folder), which are needed to run it, as XFoiol needs to store temporary polar results on your PC that QBlade then imports.

You can try running QBlade as an administrator—that might fix the issue. If not, it’s hard to say exactly what’s wrong, but it’s definitely related to user permissions on your machine and not something in the QBlade code itself.

If running as admin doesn’t help, you’ve got a few options:

  • Download and use a standalone version of XFoil to analyze polars, then import them into QBlade. You won’t need the permissions for the next steps in your turbine design.
  • Run QBlade on a different PC, do the polar analysis there, save the project, and load it onto your machine.
  • Run QBlade in a Linux environment like Ubuntu using VirtualBox or something similar.
  • Try changing the file permissions manually

Best,

David
