Passive blade coning mechanism (gas damper) — blade

Hello all,

I am modelling a passive downwind coning mechanism for a small  3 blade turbine. The concept is a gas spring/damper located inside the hub with lever arm connected and other end of lever arm is connected at rotor blade. So in the high wind speed rotor blade is flapped away from the tower and reduce their swept area with high cone angle of 45 degree limit currently set.

For the currently  I am trying to create a substrctrue file with damping parameters of gas only that it mentioned below

———————- QBLADE SUBSTRUCTURE / HINGE FILE —————————
Downwind Turbine – Gas Spring Damper Mechanism (FIXED)

H_POS = 0.0 (blade root – where hub connects)
H_AXIS = 1, 0, 0 (flapwise rotation – out of rotor plane)
H_STIFF = 2500.0 (N·m/rad – gas spring stiffness)
H_DAMP = 200.0 (N·m·s/rad – hydraulic damping)
H_LIMITS= 0, 60 (deg – 0=aligned, 60=max downwind cone angle)

However, As per research i did, Maybe i have to enable a DOF for blade as well in this case but i am not sure about that. So i would like to know more about that is there any sample project available on this kind of mechanisam. My concept is somehow match with the 2 blade downwind turbine to counter the load on blades. Currently, I could not see any flapping effect while on simulation. So do i have to change in my substrctrue file or in the main ASCII file.

Any guidance or any useful thoughts on this mechanisam  would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

Manthan

Hello Manthan,

At present it is not possible to model a flexible blade hinge in QBlade.

While this feature is on our wider development roadmap, there is currently no fixed date for its implementation.

Best regards,

David

Dear David,

Thank you for the kind reply. But it is possible that I will implement the sub structure means hinge plant between hub and wind turbine rotor blade with providing the offset related to my hinge plate. I’m just wondering if possible. Thank you so much for your support and time.

Best regards,

Manthan

Dear Manthan,

It is possible to define a spring/damper for arbitrary DoFs between the complete rotor nacelle assembly (RNA) and the substructure, however it is not possible to define such spring/damper elements connected to individual blades.

Best regards,

David
