Question regarding the design of a HAWT blade

PreviousPage 3 of 3

Hi Bob,

I would say that in general, the BEM is not capable of handling such strongly curved blades. The BEM momentum balance is carried out in the rotor-plane while the blades are curved out of this plane.

The difference between the two modules you are reffering to is that the BEM is a steady state BEM while the QSimulation modulke carries out simulations in the time domain.

To get a better representation of the aerodynamics for your blade design switch from the “Unsteady BEM” to the “Free Vortex” option for the Wake Type in the Turbine Setup Dialog and the perform simulation in the time domain – see the attached image…

Hi David,

In Qblade, when I input the peak TSR, it determines the chord and angle of attack using Betz’s method, etc. What specific formula does it use?

Hi Bob,

you can checkout the used formulas in OptimizeDlg.cpp, which contains the full source code for these functions. Download the source code from here!

Best,

David
